The Well and the Mine
MAY/JUNE 2010
Fannie Flagg was right, you will easily step into the lives of the Moore family. I remember my own 98 year old grandmother telling me how life back then (1929-30) was more simple, today was so complicated to her. When I read this story, I think of what life was like for my own grandmother and what kind of little girl she was growing up. Life was hard work, but relationships were simple, and everyone seemed to know their place.

Life was very hard, indeed, and rewards that would seem insignificant to us today, brought such happiness back then. My grandfather (born 1923) often tells me stories of his very poor, hard working family and growing up in KY during the Great Depression, which are usually ended with the characteristic he most feels younger generations lack due to not having experienced bottom line survival via good old hard work. Stories like him having his 1st family duty job out in the fields from dawn to dusk beginning at age 2 or 3 (and how critical each person's chores were, down to the tiniest of them), and about having received a toy cap pistol from a visiting preacher (the only real toy he ever owned, a gift that touches him deeply to this day) come to mind. Great suggestion for a read, I may check it out, thanks!
